Lebanon Valley College’s Chamber Orchestra will perform Thursday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of Blair Music Center.

ANNVILLE, PA (03/12/2015)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College's Chamber Orchestra will perform Thursday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of Blair Music Center. Four ensembles: the Woodwind Quintet, the Brass Quintet, and two string trios also feature in the concert. The performance is free and open to the public.

Dr. Johannes Dietrich, Newton and Adelaide Burgner Endowed Professor of Instrumental Music, leads the Chamber Orchestra. "For several years, we have built programs around the work our chamber ensembles are doing," he noted. "In contrast to most orchestras, I lead from the concertmaster seat rather than serving as conductor. This creates exciting music because the success of these performances depends on each member of the ensemble listening closely, leading when the music requires, and working to blend tone and balance.

"I've found this to be a much more active way of performing," Dietrich added. "It builds on some wonderful experiences I had as an undergraduate, where I had the opportunity to play in the String Orchestra of the Rockies, a professional string orchestra that also performed without a conductor."

For this concert, the Chamber Orchestra will perform Beethoven's Overture to Prometheus and the Sinfonia in B flat Major, Op. 18 no. 2 by J. C. Bach.

The Lebanon Valley College Woodwind Quintet (Amy Karnes '15, flute; Hannah Pell '15, oboe; Luke Dougherty '17, clarinet; Jeff Dundore '17, horn; John Johnston '15, bassoon) is coached by Beverly Butts, adjunct assistant professor in music. They will perform the Rondo from Quintet, Op 71 by Beethoven, Ugros (Leaping Dance) from Early Hungarian Dances by Farkas Ferenc, and Suite in B Minor by J. S. Bach

The Brass Quintet (Amanda Phillips '15, trumpet; Jonathan Fogleman '15, trumpet; Renee Cooper '18, horn; Amanda Strouse '17, trombone; John Johnston '15, tuba) is coached by Dr. Christopher Heffner, associate professor of music. They will perform Fanfare To La Peri by Paul Dukas, arranged by Charles Decker; Salvation is Created by Peter Tschesnokoff, arranged by Vernon M. Whaley; and The Music of George Gershwin by George and Ira Gershwin, arranged by Zachary Smith.

Dietrich will join violinists Savannah Seiple '18 and Rachel-Joy Seifrit '18 for the Trio in C Major for two violins and viola, Op. 87 by Beethoven. He will also perform with Adam White '16, violin and Anthony Scheuerman '16, viola, in the Terzetto in C Major, Op 74, by Dvorak. These performances build on the tradition of faculty-student collaborations of chamber music.

Special recognition goes to John Johnston '15 who will perform on three different instruments during the event–tuba, bassoon, and his primary instrument of Oboe, a rare feat for a single concert.
