AMAGANSETT, NY (01/14/2008)(readMedia)-- Lee Zeldin, candidate for the First Congressional District of New York, former Army JAG officer, and Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, officially kicked off his campaign for United States Congress today. Zeldin announced his candidacy at the Amagansett American Legion Hall before a crowd of supporters, which included his wife, Diana, and twin one-year-old daughters, Mikayla and Arianna.

Zeldin’s decision follows extensive talks with family, and community civic and political leaders. Zeldin was honored to be introduced to the East Hampton crowd by the town’s Republican Chairman Bill Gardiner.

The announcement was marked by Zeldin’s brand of integrity-based leadership, attention to issues affecting Suffolk County’s middle class and the need to keep Eastern Long Island’s communities viable over the long term.

“The soul of our campaign is built upon a foundation of public integrity and selfless leadership,” said Zeldin. “Together, we share the challenges of owning homes and raising families on Long Island.”

Zeldin’s event-filled Monday schedule spanned more than 80 miles, including three towns within the district.

At the morning event at the Riverhead Polish Hall, guests who braved the winter weather were treated to a free breakfast and an opportunity to learn about Zeldin’s vision.

“As a Congressman, there are primarily five areas in need of immediate action,” said Zeldin. “We must reduce Long Island’s unreasonably high cost of living, better assist our senior citizens, support our military veterans, strengthen our national security and secure our borders.”

The final event within the district was the opening of the Zeldin 08 campaign headquarters at 458 William Floyd Parkway, Suite 4, in Shirley.

“Make no mistake, opening this office in my hometown and announcing my campaign today mark a special day in Suffolk County,” said Zeldin. “Long Island’s future begins now.”

The day concluded with a fundraiser at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place featuring former Senator Alfonse M. D'Amato.

Zeldin previously served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He served as a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
