Lime Publishes Its 6-Month Findings As Brookline Scooter Pilot Winds Down

600+ Brookline riders rode more than 25x during the pilot, demonstrating the need for alternative transportation options

BOSTON, MA (11/19/2019) (readMedia)-- As the Brookline six-month scooter pilot winds down, Lime- the leading U.S. smart mobility company- released a Brookline town report with a look at Lime's work in Brookline over the pilot, as well as how and why riders used scooters.

"As we wind down Lime's 6-month scooter pilot, our data shows that thousands of Brookline residents have come to rely on scooters to get around in a convenient and affordable way," said Scott Mullen, Director of Northeast Expansion at Lime. "The popularity of Lime's scooter pilot clearly demonstrates a need for reliable, sustainable transportation options in Brookline that can be met with micromobility. Beacon Hill legislators should swiftly pass statewide micromobility legislation so communities can take advantage of new mobility options."

"As small business owners, we are always trying to figure out how to add more foot traffic, expand our reach and create business visibility to the block. We could not be happier that a bike and scooter corral will be located in such close proximity to our donut shop. We see this as just the start of adding more foot traffic and buzz to the 400 Harvard Street block. The more foot traffic and street culture that exists, the more people will be drawn to check out this very special neighborhood in Brookline we are proud to call home." Lime's Brookline scooter program has been immensely popular, concluding with:

  • Total trips: 101,000+
  • Total riders: 25,000+
  • Riders who have taken 25 or more trips: 600+
  • Riders who have taken 10 or more trips: 2200+
  • Median distance/trip: 0.8 miles

Lime's Brookline scooter program has gotten people out of their cars and reduced carbon emissions:

  • Estimated car trips avoided: 31,000+
  • Estimate of vehicle miles avoided: 34,000+
  • Estimate of metric tons of carbon avoided: 12+
  • Estimate of gallons of gas offset: 1,000+

When Brookline kicked off this innovative pilot in April, the Town began addressing the need for new transportation infrastructure like micromobility parking spots and bike lanes.

173 riders responded to the Brookline survey, which included demographics to how the scooters have changed people's everyday transportation needs. Riders in the survey are overwhelmingly local to Brookline with 74% reporting that they live, work, or go to school in Brookline. Significantly, over 93 percent of respondents wanted a permanent scooter-share program in Brookline.

The survey also shows how scooters have reduced riders' reliance on cars. Nearly 30,000 car trips were replaced over the course of the 150,000 rides taken:

  • 30.8 percent of riders used a Lime scooter rather than a car (personally owned, taxi, or ride-hailing).
  • 47.5 percent of riders used Lime to get to or from public transit within the last month.
  • 73 percent of riders live in households that have access to 1 or fewer cars.
