Livingston to discuss 'economics of discrimination' at Community Lecture Series

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (04/11/2014)(readMedia)-- As we celebrate 50 years of the Civil Rights act of 1964, the consequences of discrimination can still be felt in today's economy.

Flagler College Professor of Economics Dr. Felix Livingston will address what he calls "the economics of discrimination" when he speaks at the April 22 Community Lecture Series event at Flagler.

"Freedom of minorities in both job and product markets is magnified when there is competition, and diminished when there is collusion among sellers or buyers," said Livingston, who oversees the college's new Honorable Entrepreneurship program. "Analyzing the economics of discrimination improves understanding of the causes and effects of discrimination and is useful for framing public policy."

Livingston said his talk, "Economic Freedom and Civil Rights," will explore the close connection between economic and political freedom, and will also touch on the economics of slavery.

Livingston earned his Ph.D. and his M.A. in Economics from Kansas State University. He earned his B.A. in Economics from Pittsburgh State University. He has written more than 40 academic articles, chapters and essays, and his work has been widely published and reprinted around the world.

The 2014 Community Lecture Series is titled "The Rights Revolution: Civil Rights, Human Rights and Beyond" and focuses on the past, present and future of civil rights.

Tickets to the lecture are $5 per person. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King St. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and pastry reception.

This year, thanks to VISIT FLORIDA's Cultural Heritage and Nature Tourism Grant Program, Flagler College offers complimentary admission to the Flagler College Community Lecture Series for any St. Johns County tourism employee. Tourism employees interested in attending the lecture will need to present their employee name tag or ID at the lecture series registration table.
