PHILADELPHIA, PA (08/27/2013)(readMedia)-- PHILADELPHIA (August 27, 2013) - Professor of History Randall M. Miller, Ph.D., of Glen Mills, has been appointed to the board of trustees of The Library Company of Philadelphia (LCP), the nation's oldest cultural institution, which was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731.

"It is a great honor to be affiliated with The Library Company, which is an elite institution and the oldest research library in the United States," says Miller. "Its collections, which are of the highest quality, include all manner of print materials, such as rare books, lithographs, pamphlets, broadsides, ephemera and more, dating from the first European contact in America through the end of the 19th century. Benjamin Franklin, its founder, is in many respects, the complete American. He was self-invented, and championed improvement through learning, which aligns with my own beliefs about the importance of education."

Miller, who holds the William Dirk Warren '50 Sesquicentennial Chair at Saint Joseph's, has long been associated with the LCP, having used its collections for historical research since the beginning of his career. As a professor, he has introduced many Saint Joseph's undergraduates to its holdings. In addition, he co-curated an LCP exhibit, titled "The Genesis of Republicanism: The Birth and Growth of the Grand Old Party, 1854-1872," which also included a symposium that was the basis for a book he co-edited on the topic, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2002.

A highly regarded historian, author and political commentator, Miller's LCP board term will last for three years. He is also a current board member of Cliveden of the National Trust, and is a former board chair of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
