Local Resident and Tufts University Graduate Andrea Wenglowskyj Receives Fulbright Award

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, MA (10/26/2010)(readMedia)-- Andrea Wenglowskyj, a resident of Rochester, N.Y., and a 2007 Masters of Fine Arts graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University, received a Fulbright scholarship to the Ukraine for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Wenglowskj graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2002, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and a Bachelor of Arts in French. She will be conducting research on contemporary art in Ukraine from January to October 2011. Based in Kiev, she will create an online resource about the state of Ukrainian art since the country's independence in 1991, conducting interviews with artists and art professionals. Her hope is to curate small exhibitions, as well as to expose Ukrainian artists to opportunities in the United States.

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected based on academic or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

More than 1,500 U.S. citizens will travel abroad for the 2010-2011 academic year through the Fulbright Student Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. The Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

"Fostering leadership, learning and empathy between cultures was and remains the purpose of the international scholarship program," the late Sen. Fulbright said.
