Local Resident and Tufts University Graduate Daniella Burgi-Palomino Receives Fulbright Award

MEDFORD, MA (10/26/2010)(readMedia)-- Daniella Burgi-Palomino, a resident of Middle Village, N.Y., and a 2007 graduate of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, received a Fulbright scholarship to Mexico for the 2010-2011 academic year.

At Tufts University, Daniella completed a double major in International Relations and History and completed a minor in Latin American Studies. She was also active with campus and community organizations, working with El Salvadoran refugees. Following her graduation from Tufts, Daniella worked for three years at the development and humanitarian relief international NGO, Oxfam America as a program associate for Oxfam's U.S. regional office in Boston. She will studying anthropology in Mexico and completing a project on the effect of migration on the female-led households that are left behind.

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected based on academic or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

More than 1,500 U.S. citizens will travel abroad for the 2010-2011 academic year through the Fulbright Student Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. The Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

"Fostering leadership, learning and empathy between cultures was and remains the purpose of the international scholarship program," the late Sen. Fulbright said.
