CANTON , OH (02/12/2013)(readMedia)-- The Malone University forensics team uses the gift of speech to glorify God. Students research, write, and present speeches and interpretive performances on current and relevant topics, competing against other colleges and universities. Students work toward creating four different events to develop specific speaking skills. They compete with the same selections for the academic year. There are 11 different event categories and awards are given to the top 6 finishers in each event.
Local students who have received top honors include
Amanda Maxwell, a senior psychology major from Doylestown, Ohio. Maxwell took 3rd place at the Marietta College tournament in Communication Analysis. This speech takes a published, scholarly theory on the impact of social art on society and applies the tenets to the work of Swedish artist Makode Linde. Earlier in 2012, Linde attempted to raise awareness and outrage about the practice of female genital mutilation in Africa with a controversial performance art piece.
She also took 2nd place at the Morgan State University tournament in Communication Analysis, as well as 2nd place in Poetry on the theme of Dreams, 4th place in Prose called My Sister, which tells the story of a young woman who learns to cope with her sister's mental illness and eventual suicide, and 4th place in Duo on Blonde stereotypes.
In addition, she took 5th place at The Ohio State University tournament in Communication Analysis on Makode Linde's social art.
