CLIFTON PARK, NY (05/31/2012)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. John Andonie, a resident of Clifton Park, has been selected to serve as the operations officer of the Troy-based 42nd Infantry Division.
Andonie, a graduate of the United States Military Academy who served in Iraq and commanded the famed 1st Battalion 69th Infantry in New York City, is currently serving as the Director of Plans, Operations and Training for the New York Army National Guard.
In his new job he will be responsible for the training and operations of the famed Rainbow Division which is responsible for more than 20,000 National Guard Soldiers in states across the Northeast.
Andonie graduated from West Point in 1989 as an Armor officer and served in the Active Army until joining the New York Army National Guard in 2000. During his time in the Active Army he served as a platoon leader, company executive officer, personnel officer and commander of Troop A, 1st Squadron 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Irwin California.
While serving in the 42nd Infantry Division as a plans officer he was Assistant Professor Of Military Science for the Siena College Army Reserve Officers Training Corps Program. He served in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 as the tactical command post operations officer of the 42nd Infantry Division.
He commanded the 1st Battalion 69th Infantry from 2008 to 2010.
His awards include the Bronze Star, four Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with Mobilization Device), and the Parachutist Badge.
He and his wife Kathleen have two daughters: Rachel and Elizabeth.
