DECORAH, IA (12/05/2012)(readMedia)-- Sarah McRoberts, Luther College junior from Oxford, Iowa, was one of five students selected to present their work at the 2012 Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science, Nov. 2-3, at Washington University in St. Louis.
McRoberts said, "It was really encouraging to see what my peers, and perhaps future research partners, were working on."
At the conference McRoberts presented "Using Stochastic Cellular Automata to Model the Growth and Competition Between Two Stationary Species." In her presentation she described her work on stochastic cellular automata, which is when each cell within a grid can be empty or have a form life in it.
McRoberts, the daughter of James and Connie McRoberts of Oxford, is a mathematics and computer science double major. She is a 2010 graduate of Clear Creek Amana High School.
The symposium provides undergraduates in the fields of mathematics, physical sciences and computer sciences an opportunity to present their research projects and results to their peers and faculty. Every fall for more than 10 years, Washington University and the University of Chicago have alternated hosting meetings at which undergraduates present their research.
Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution of 2,500 students in Decorah, Iowa.
