MSGA Applauds Introduction of SAFEST Legislation

MANKATO, MN (07/22/2010)(readMedia)-- The Minnesota Soybean Growers Association (MSGA) applauds U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (MN) and Tim Johnson, (SD), for introducing renewable energy legislation that will help boost the nation's biodiesel industry. The Securing America's Future with Energy and Sustainable Technologies Act (SAFEST), introduced last week, includes a long-term extension of the biodiesel tax incentive as well as many other incentives meant to strengthen the renewable fuels industry and rural economies.

"Minnesota has been a national leader in establishing the biodiesel industry, and it is gratifying to see Senator Klobuchar and Senator Johnson taking action to further strengthen this industry," says MSGA President Kurt Krueger, Rothsay, Minn. "Not only do clean, home-grown biodiesel and ethanol build markets for farmers and create jobs in rural America, these renewable fuels displace imported oil and help keep our air and water clean."

Krueger was in Washington DC with a contingent of Minnesota soybean farmers last week when the announcement was made and had the opportunity to personally thank Sen. Klobuchar for her support.

While this legislation is an excellent step in the right direction, MSGA is still working with the American Soybean Association (ASA) and the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) to push for a retroactive extension of the biodiesel tax credit this summer. MSGA members are encouraged to continue to contact their senators and representatives to show their support for the biodiesel industry.

The Minnesota Soybean Growers Association is a non-profit, farmer-controlled membership organization established in 1962. Its goal is to assure profitable soybean farming by monitoring government policies and supporting research and market development activities.
