MILWAUKEE, WI (04/23/2014)(readMedia)-- Madeline Smart, a junior studying psychology and German in the College of Undergraduate Arts and Sciences from Hopkins, Minn., was elected president of Marquette University's Residence Hall Association for the 2014-15 school year. Smart is one of seven student leaders elected to the executive board of the RHA, the governing body that serves as the voice of Marquette's resident student population.

The RHA Executive Board's mission is to secure the interests of residence hall and university-owned apartment residents at all levels of university governance, to establish fellowship, and provide for the educational, spiritual, cultural, social, and communicative needs among residence halls and university owned apartments. Each executive board member is in charge of chairing a program as well as a sub-committee. Executive board members are required to have two office hours per week as well as to attend all general body, executive board and sub-committee meetings.

Elected RHA representatives serve as liaisons between their halls or apartments and the association by addressing the needs of the residents through programming, initiating change, and building community among the residence halls.

As the president, Smart's responsibilities include presiding over all Residence Hall Association meetings, being a spokesperson for the organization and chairing executive board meetings. In addition, the president is required to remain on campus during the summer before their term and work 10 hours per week in the RHA office.
