Maine Army National Guard Soldier Selected for West Point
AUGUSTA, ME (02/03/2015)(readMedia)-- Brig. Gen. James D. Campbell is pleased to announce that another Maine Army National Guard Soldier has been selected to the US Military Academy at West Point.
Pvt. Keegan J. Thomas of Standish is among the few who have the distinct honor of attending the prestigious West Point. Each year, only 85 cadetships are offered to the reserve components and are extremely competitive.
"We are all very proud of Pvt. Thomas' extraordinary achievement in being selected to attend West Point," Campbell said. "He joins the long line of men and women from our state who have attended this prestigious institution and have gone on to serve our state and nation in many different capacities. Pvt. Thomas is a superb Soldier, and is representative of all the fine young men and women from Maine who are serving in our National Guard, the Active Army, and in all of the services."
Thomas joined the Maine Army National Guard as carpentry and masonry specialist after graduating from Cheverus High School.
"I joined the Maine Army National Guard to serve my country," Thomas said. "I wanted to improve my leadership abilities, become an officer and open up more opportunities for my future."
Lt. Col. Jon Cookson, the recruiting and retention commander for the Maine Army National Guard said "this will be the third service academy selection out of the Recruit Sustainment Program in two years".
