Marcus Payne Receives Final Convocation Award at Hampden-Sydney College

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2013)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 25, Hampden-Sydney College senior Marcus Gabriel Payne received the Leila B. Thompson Eta Sigma Phi Latin Prize, presented by Dr. Janice F. Siegel, Associate Professor of Classics. The Thompson Latin Prize recognizes the student with outstanding accomplishments in the study of classical languages. Eta Sigma Phi is the national classics honor society.

A Patrick Henry Scholar, Marcus played defensive line on the varsity football team and was three times named to the ODAC All-Academic Team in Football. He served as President of the honor society Eta Sigma Phi (classics) and is a member of the Big Brothers Mentor program, the Classics Club, the Society of 1791 leadership program, the Tiger Athletic Club, and the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), and Phi Alpha Theta (history). A history and classics major, Marcus graduated from The Covenant School and is the son of Don & Patty Payne of Charlottesville.
