Marilyn Sokol named Iowan of the Day

DES MOINES, IA (08/01/2024) (readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present Marilyn Sokol of Belle Plaine as an Iowan of the Day for the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Marilyn is passionate about volunteering in her community and has spent the last 17+ years coordinating programs so that others can also give back. She volunteers Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday every week at the Benton County Community Center. Marilyn is the coordinator for the Wednesday group; she organizes and oversees a group of 16 volunteers who complete various projects.

These projects include sewing pillows for cancer and heart surgery patients in Cedar Rapids hospitals, making lap blankets and treats for nursing homes, coloring pictures for elementary students in the Belle Plaine Community School District, Summer & Holiday Food Programs, and Trees of Sharing. On top of coordinating these projects, Marilyn also helps find drivers for people who need rides to doctor appointments.

Marilyn's day of recognition will be Thursday, August 8th at the 2024 Iowa State Fair. She will be recognized with a presentation on the Anne & Bill Riley stage at 12:00 PM. Along with accommodations at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, she will receive a gift bag, Grandstand Concert tickets, use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart, a cash prize, Iowa State Fair admission tickets, and VIP parking.

The program continues to honor Iowans across the state who have made a difference in the lives of others, while upholding the characteristics associated with Iowa- dependability, integrity, hard work and sense of community.
