HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2011)(readMedia)-- On May 8, at commencement ceremonies marking the end of the 236th academic year at Hampden-Sydney College, Marshall Thomas McClung, Class of 2011, received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion. The award was presented by Dr. Christopher B. Howard, President of Hampden-Sydney College. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion is given annually by the New York Southern Society in honor of its first president, Algernon Sydney Sullivan. This award is given to a member of the graduating class distinguished for excellence of character and generous service to his fellows.

McClung served as a Head Resident Advisor, as an investigator for the Student Court, and as a writer for the student newspaper, The Hampden-Sydney Tiger. He was a member of the Garnet & Grey Society (Admissions Office tour guide) and was a member of the social fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha. He was the recipient in Fall 2008 of the Omicron Delta Kappa Scholarship Award and in Fall 2009, the President's Award for Scholarship and Character. McClung was recognized as a student leader in both the 2010 and the 2011 editions of Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges. A religion major, he is a graduate of Salem High School and is the son of Thomas & Gail McClung of Salem.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
