DELHI, NY (06/20/2015)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi officials have announced that Martin Pettit has been named Chief of University Police. Pettit will oversee overall administration and supervision of the college's University Police Department, which includes 10 sworn officers, a parking assistant, three office clerks, and student staff members.
The Chief of University Police reports to the Vice President for Student Life, and plays an important role as a member of the Student Life team. "The campus community and I are looking forward to Martin Pettit's leadership of the University Police Department," said Barbara Jones, Vice President for Student Life. "Martin brings a wealth of knowledge to SUNY Delhi from his experience at SUNY Binghamton and in the Village of Afton. Martin possesses a strong community policing and training background with expertise in accreditation which will be assets to the department and college moving forward."
With 15 years' experience as a University Police officer and lieutenant, Pettit comes to SUNY Delhi from Binghamton University where he served as a lieutenant and officer. There he worked closely with the New York State Police, Vestal Police, and the Broome and Chenango County Sheriff's Office. He instructed on New York State firearms, mental health, Rape Aggression Defense (RAD), and served as a Zone 6 Broome County Law Enforcement Academy instructor and a member of Binghamton University's Incident Management Team.
Pettit also served as Chief of Police part-time for the Village of Afton where he was responsible for strategic planning for the use of the Police Department's resources, coordinating the activities of the department, and acting as a liaison with local departments while ensuring the highest quality services.
Pettit is a New York State certified police instructor, a certified police field training officer, an OC spray instructor, a certified active shooter instructor and he is trained in critical incident response.
Pettit holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from SUNY Plattsburgh and an Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice from Fulton Montgomery Community College. He has been honored with multiple departments' meritorious and excellent service awards, including the Life Saving Award from Binghamton's New York State University Police in 2012.
