SUMMERDALE, PA. (09/20/2011)(readMedia)-- If you found Central Penn's September Student of the Month in the dictionary, she would be defined as follows: student worker, dance team member, student mentor, friend, animal-lover, daughter, sister and aunt. However, Maya Lindsay would say her main definition right now is dedicated student.
"At the end of the day, I just want to be successful," says Lindsay. "After I graduate, I want to have the kind of job that I really enjoy, one that doesn't feel like work. In order to achieve that, I need to dedicate myself to my studies and follow my passion."
Marketing Services staff members Sarah Groff and Lezli Austen nominated Lindsay for the honor. Lindsay serves as Central Penn's current student writer/reporter.
"She is a valuable asset to our team, covering student activities for our online newsletters, writing articles and taking photos," says Austen. "She has learned to take great notes at an event, and be professional while interviewing, and has learned to multi-task and stay on top of her deadlines.
"Working in Marketing Services has been the best motivation for me," says Lindsay. "Being a student reporter helped improve my writing and helped build my confidence."
She doesn't seem to lack for confidence when she performs with Armored, the College's dance team. She has been a part of Armored since the team was formed in spring 2010.
"Maya is very dedicated," says Megan Peterson, residence life director and advisor of the dance team. "As one of the few original members of Armored, she took her commitment to the dance team seriously."
Lindsay even passes that dedication along to others.
"My advice for incoming students?" asks Lindsay, "Be focused. This College is serious. Know that you are coming to school for an education or you are just wasting money."
One of her favorite classes was communications and law, in which she learned an incredible amount, she says.
"I learned so much from Professor Patty Waltermyer on first amendment issues and communications," says Lindsay.
Lindsay also admits that she is a movie junkie. "I have a ridiculous amount of DVDs," she says. And, yes, Twilight is my favorite movie."
Lindsay hails from Philadelphia, where she grew up and lives with her parents, Bershel and Alexander, and her cat Sapphire. Her brother, Alexander, III, and nephews Shamir, 4, and Aiden, 1, also live in Philadelphia.
