McDaniel College awards Callas scholarship to Juliana Broussard of Hagerstown

WESTMINSTER, MD (11/10/2010)(readMedia)-- McDaniel College sophomore Juliana Broussard of Hagerstown, Md., is the 2010-2011 recipient of the Margaret and Peter Callas '49 Scholarship. A graduate of North Hagerstown High School, Broussard is majoring in Biology and earned Dean's List high honors for the spring semester 2010.

The non-renewable scholarship was established in 2008 through a gift from Margaret and Peter Callas. It is awarded annually to a graduate of a high school in Washington County, Md., who is minoring in elementary, secondary, or Pre-K-12 education. The selection of a recipient for this endowed fund is based on the recipient's academic merit.

A former Maryland delegate from Washington County, Peter Callas was an alumni visitor to the College's Trustee Board from 1985 to 1988. He received a bachelor's degree in History in 1949 and a master's degree in Education from the College in 1955. He later earned a doctorate degree from George Washington University in 1972.

As a college student, Callas aspired to be an educator and went on to become a successful teacher, administrator, college professor and president of the Washington County Board of Education. He credits the educational foundation laid at Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College, with making his election to the Maryland House of Delegates possible.

"My attendance at WMC made me what I am today," he said in an interview with the College's alumni magazine, The Hill. "The program is of high quality and has a proven record of producing not only outstanding educators, but also many effective politicians."
