McGowan Joins GCC's The BEST Center

BATAVIA, NY (10/16/2014)(readMedia)-- The BEST Center at Genesee Community College is pleased to announce the addition of John McGowan as Director of Business Employee Skills Training. Since 2007, McGowan has served as Career Services Coordinator at GCC and will bring to his new position established relationships with many local businesses.

McGowan earned an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from GCC in 1986 and went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from SUNY Brockport. He spent 25 years in management at Eastman Kodak before returning to GCC in 2005 as Career Sevices Coordinator. He has developed many programs to support opportunities for students, including bringing a Toastmaster's Club to campus. He's been honored several times by SUNY's Career Development Organization for Employer Panels he has moderated, and in 2013 he received a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

In his new role, McGowan will continue to oversee the Career Center, as well as the promotion, administration and delivery of The BEST Center's training programs and services throughout the GLOW region. He will also coordinate annual state workforce-development, safety-training, and other related grants. "John already has great relationships with local businesses," said Reid Smalley, Executive Director of Workforce Development at GCC. "His new role will allow him to expand the College's visibility with businesses and organizations."

"I'm passionate about career and personal development," said McGowan. "This position affords a new opportunity to help people grow their skills beyond the College. I look forward to working with local businesses to help them and their employees thrive even more."

A Batavia resident, John is active in the community as a member of the Batavia Rotary and other organizations. He has extensive coaching experience in youth sports and currently is an assistant coach with the GCC baseball team. He is working toward a Doctorate in Psychology in Sport and Performance Psychology from the University of the Rockies in Denver, CO. John is a father of four children; John Jr., Joseph, Michael, Jennifer and grandfather of three; Isabella, Alexander and John Carlo.
