Media Advisory: Waterford Locks Event Postponed

'Highest Lift Locks in U.S.'

WATERFORD, NY (09/06/2011)(readMedia)--

A ceremony to recognize the Waterford Flight of Locks on the Erie Canal as an historic engineering marvel has been postponed indefinitely in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene, the New York State Canal Corporation announced.

The American Society of Civil Engineers had planned to dedicate a plaque on Sept. 9 at Lock 2 Park to recognize the Waterford Flight as the "greatest series of high lift locks in the shortest distance" in the U.S.

No date has been set for when the event might be re-scheduled.

The five-lock Flight, opened in 1915, changes the elevation 169 feet over 1.25 miles to bypass the Cohoes Falls of the Mohawk River.

Because of their innovative design and protective gates, the Waterford Flight remained undamaged by the recent high-water incidents.
