Medina Resident and Ashland University Junior Receives Scholarship

ASHLAND, OH (11/16/2011)(readMedia)-- Ashland University junior Erika Sullivan, a resident of Medina, has been awarded the 2011-2012 Business Advisory Council's Endowed $1,000 Scholarship at Ashland.

Erika is the daughter of James and Karen Sullivan of Medina, Ohio, and majors in accounting and finance. She plans to graduate in May of 2013.

Sullivan was presented this prestigious scholarship at the University's fall 2011 Business Advisory Council Meeting that was held in October. Sullivan was selected among 16 eligible students that were later narrowed down to 11 by the Business and Economics faculty. All 11 applicants nominated had a GPA of 3.76 or higher.

As part of the selection process, the students were required to submit a letter of interest, resume and three letters of references. Established in 2006, the scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate junior or senior majoring in business or economics. The scholarship criterion requires the recipient to have a record of outstanding leadership in the College of Business, on the AU campus and in the community.

During this selection process, Ashland University faculty noted that Sullivan "is always prepared and engaged in the classroom and that she has integrity, initiative and intelligence that will transition into a successful accounting career."

Sullivan is a member of the Ashland University Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Fraternity and National Honor Society; has been awarded the Ashland University Presidential Scholarship; and is a Deans' List student. She is on the Ashland University Varsity Women's Tennis team and is 2nd Team All-GLIAC.

She is involved in Lifework Leadership that works to develop Christian leadership in the business world; serves as vice president of competitions for the Institute of Management Accountants; and attends Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Campus Bible Studies. She is an Annual Report Intern for the J.M. Smucker Co. in Orrville, Ohio.

Sullivan has provided community service for ZOE House Women's Shelter, participated in Cuyahoga Valley River Sweep, Relay for Life and St. Herman's House of Hospitality; reads to special needs students; and is on the Ashland University Community Service team.

Dr. Jeff Russell, dean of the Dauch College of Business and Economics, said Sullivan's cntinued commitment to academics, leadership and service is commendable and "we are fortunate to have her in the Dauch College of Business and Economics."
