Menendez's First Half Score Leads Roos Past Sage, 1-0

CANTON, NY (09/05/2014)(readMedia)-- A Jose Menendez (Maracay, Venezuela) score in the 28th minute lifted the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a 1-0 defeat of visiting Sage Colleges on Friday afternoon.

With just less than 18 minutes left in the opening half the Roos drew a free kick after Josh Geller (Monroe, NY) made a move down the right sideline. Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) took the free kick and Menendez cut across the face of goal shielding the Sage keeper as he deflected the ball into the left side netting.

SUNY Canton (2-0) owned a 3-1 shots on goal edge in the opening half as they took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

The Roos continued to hold the advantage in the second stanza once again holding a three to one shots on target advantage. Play got a bit more physical in the closing 45 minutes. Sage (0-2) had one late chance with nine seconds remaining but Paul Reynoso's attempt sailed high.

Austin Lamay (Malone, NY) stopped two shots in goal, earning his second consecutive shutout, while TJ Zehner turned aside four shots.

The men's soccer team is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Skidmore College.
