Mental Health Foundation to honor leading voice on mental health at Special Evening in New York

MANHATTAN, NY (03/09/2014)(readMedia)-- The Mental Health Foundation will honor one of the world's leading voices on mental health at A Special Evening in New York, Thursday, April 3. Jeffrey Lieberman, M.D. is the Lawrence C. Kolb Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also the Director of New York Psychiatric Institute; Psychiatrist in-chief, Columbia University Medical Center of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the current President of the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Lieberman is the author of more than 550 papers and articles and 16 books on mental illness and psychiatry. His work has advanced our knowledge of the natural history, pathophysiology and treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. This research has fundamentally contributed to our current standards of care, the development of novel therapeutic drugs and the clinical model for the early detection and prevention of schizophrenia.

The Honorary Hosts for the event are Gov. Mario and Matilda Raffa Cuomo. Mrs. Cuomo is a member of the Mental Health Foundation Board.

"Dr. Lieberman has helped so many individuals and families through his groundbreaking work," Mrs. Cuomo said. "It will truly be a special evening to hear his insight as we recognize his outstanding career and contributions."

The Mental Health Foundation has presented a range of successful events in recent years in its effort to promote better understanding about mental health, including programs with former U.S. First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Tipper Gore, Marylou Whitney and her husband John Hendrickson, filmmaker Joe Pantoliano, and others. In recent years, the Foundation's "It's Okay to Talk About It" grant program has supported best practice programs for mental health outreach to young adults with a peer to peer component.

A Special Evening in New York will be held at the Christopher Columbus Citizens Townhouse, 8 E. 69th Street in Manhattan. Sponsors are Pfizer, New York State United Teachers, CSEA, Tonio Burgos and Associates and Nowak Associates.

Newsday columnist and TV commentator Ellis Henican will serve as the program's Master of Ceremonies.
