Ringgold's Andrew Lockwood won Mercer University's Louie D. Newton General Excellence Medal at the University's Macon commencement on May 14.

MACON, GA (06/17/2011)(readMedia)-- Mercer University awarded James Andrew Lockwood, of Ringgold, the Louie D. Newton General Excellence Medal, at the University's Macon commencement May 14. Lockwood he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Mercer's School of Engineering. The Louie D. Newton General Excellence Medal is awarded to a student who best exemplifies scholastic achievement as well as personal integrity, character and spiritual values.

Lockwood maintained a 3.804 grade point average while contributing to numerous civic and University organizations and holding numerous leadership positions. He was an active member and officer of the student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, a sports reporter and columnist for The Cluster, webstream manager and announcer for ASun TV and a member and director of the Mercer cycling team. Lockwood also spent a summer working with Baptist missionaries in Ecuador.

The Louie D. Newton General Excellence Medal is presented to the graduating student who best exemplifies scholastic achievement, personal integrity and character, service to the campus community and a commitment to spiritual values. The award is named in honor of Mercer Alumna, Dr. Newton, former Mercer professor, Christian journalist, distinguished pastor and renowned denominational leader.
