ERIE, PA (10/06/2010)(readMedia)-- Mercyhurst College has nominated senior Bethany Brun of Beavercreek, Ohio, for the Rhodes Scholarship for 2011-2013, according to Dr. Verna Ehret, director of the college's Prestigious Awards Program. Brun is a sociology and religious studies major, who is also pursuing a minor in marriage and family studies.
Brun hopes to earn a master's degree in women's studies and theology with a specialization in Christian ethics. The highly competitive Rhodes Scholarship provides two to three years of graduate study at Oxford University.
Among her many activities at Mercyhurst, Brun is co-captain of the rowing team, co-leader of the Certified Peer Educator Program, vice president of the Student Athletic Advisory Board, a Laker Leader, a research assistant to the chair of the religious studies department, and a member of three honor societies: Sigma Alpha Pi, Phi Eta Sigma and the National College Athlete Honor Society Chi Alpha Sigma.
In May 2010, Brun was a member of the crew that won the NCAA Division II Eights National Championship and an inaugural recipient of the NCAA Elite 88 Award. In her freshman year, she took NCAA D-II First-Team All-American honors, and was named Mercyhurst Rowing Rookie of the Year.
Brun also has volunteered at the International Institute of Erie, Second Harvest Food Bank, JFK Community Center and the Emmaus Soup Kitchen.
