Milwaukie native Lauren Kutler selected for Math for America fellowship

WALLA WALLA, WA (06/05/2013)(readMedia)-- Lauren Kutler of Milwaukie, Ore. was honored with a Math for America fellowship after her graduation from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.

This national fellowship allows Kutler to pursue a graduate degree in mathematics for one year at Boston University and also grants her a four-year teaching contract in a public secondary school in the United States. Kutler is the first Math for America fellow from Whitman College.

Kutler was also chosen as an alternate by the Austrian Teaching Assistants Program. This program looks for students to assist with English instruction in secondary schools in Austria.

In addition, Kutler was elected as a new member of Phi Beta Kappa, a national honor society that recognizes students who have succeeded academically in a wide variety of courses in the arts and sciences, including mathematics and foreign language. The Whitman chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1920.

Kutler is the daughter of Stephanie Ricker and Keith Kutler and a 2009 graduate of Rex Putnam High School. She received a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy during the Whitman commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19.
