ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (02/19/2014)(readMedia)-- Brenton Good draws his inspiration from modern art movements such as minimalism- and Bauhaus-inspired formalism. However, his strict adherence to rules and control is coupled with chance occurrences and controlled accidents. The resulting image has a dual nature that combines a meticulous sense of color theory with the organic nature of cracked sidewalks, coffee stains and landscape. These two poles are meant to exist in a constant state of conversation, friction and interaction.
Good's exhibit, "Printmaking," opens with a reception in Elizabethtown College's Hess Gallery at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, and continues from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through April 25.
Good has been working for years in the mediums of printmaking and painting and most recently in monotypes, which exist in a grey area, halfway between printmaking and painting, since they resist any sort of edition, making each print singular and unique. Each image goes through an etching press multiple times, with each layer of color building upon the previous one to create a rich, historical surface. Playing cards are inked and used as the printing "matrix," with common items such as string and thread used as masking agents along with elements of drawing and painting.
Good is assistant professor of art and assistant chair in the Department of Visual Art at nearby Messiah College. He has exhibited artwork internationally and has had his prints and paintings in collections at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Bilkent University in Turkey and, most recently, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas. The artist also is a published author whose writing has appeared in the journal "Image," the "UTNE Reader" and numerous exhibition catalogues.
The opening reception and exhibit are free.
