GENESEO, NY (05/09/2012)(readMedia)-- Miriam Barnett, a graduating senior chemistry major at SUNY Geneseo from Lewiston, N.Y. (14092), received a highly competitive Eli Lilly Travel Award from the Women Chemists Committee of the American Chemical Society to present her research on electrophoresis at the recent ACS national meeting in California.

Barnett was one of 12 in the country to receive the award, which provides funding for female undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to attend the meeting. She was one of the few undergraduates among the 12 awardees. She also received travel funds from the Rochester ACS chapter and from the Geneseo Foundation.

"It was an amazing conference and I'm so appreciative of the support I received," said Barnett. "The opportunity to present my research before this scientific audience was an experience that allowed me to form new connections. I also developed invaluable skills as well as an increased appreciation for the discipline. It was truly a life-changing experience."

Barnett will begin graduate work in bioinformatics next fall at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her academic adviser at Geneseo was Jeffrey Peterson, assistant professor of chemistry.
