ANNVILLE, PA (10/28/2011)(readMedia)-- The work of distinguished modern European and American artists will be introduced as part of the Modernist Prints: 1900-1950 exhibit at the Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery at Lebanon Valley College. The exhibit opens with a free public reception on Friday, Nov. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Comprised of artwork spanning the early modern period, this exhibition highlights a time of innovation in a rapidly changing world. Change is demonstrated by a wide variety of aesthetic philosophies and styles generated by a diverse group of European and American artists. These artists are indebted to or exemplify several of what we now think of as major modern styles, both representational and abstract, including impressionism, expressionism, surrealism, cubism, and constructivism (or non-objectivism).

Modernist Prints: 1900–1950 highlights the various techniques central to the popularity of printmaking in the early modern period, and represents a sampling of some of the major names working in Europe such as Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Georges Rouault, and Joan Miró. American artists in the exhibition include such notables as John Marin, Arthur B. Davies, and Milton Avery, along with several women-including Ida Abelman and early feminist artist Minna Citron-who contributed to this epochal change of vision in the art world.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Dr. Gerald Silk, professor of modern and contemporary art and chair of the art history department at Temple University, will present, "Prints Matter: Themes and Variations in the Modernist Print." The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held Thursday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall.

Both children and adults may take part in monoprinting workshops with water-based inks on Saturday, Nov. 12. The adult class is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be hosted by Nancy Williams, adjunct instructor of art and art education. LVC students will conduct a children's workshop from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monoprinting is a form of printmaking where a non-repeatable impression is made. The adult class will use Plexiglass plates and the children's class will be printing on textiles. All materials will be provided with the registration of $60 for the adult workshop ($50 for members of the gallery and $25 for LVC students), and $20 for the children's workshop. For more information and to register, contact the Gallery at gallery@lvc.edu or 717-867-6445.
