Moms and Caregivers Deliver Postcards to Assemblymember Eachus Demanding Lower Bills and an End to Gas Mandate

Advocates call for passage of NY HEAT Act before legislative session ends

CENTRAL VALLEY (06/05/2025) (readMedia)-- Yesterday, the Hudson Highlands chapter of Mothers Out Front sent a delegation of moms and grandparents to Assemblymember Eachus' district office in Central Valley today to call for passage of the NY HEAT Act - a critical affordability and clean energy bill that is a leading priority for grassroots and environmental groups across New York State.

With utility costs straining household budgets across the state and outdated laws that limit access to clean heat alternatives like heat pumps and thermal energy networks, the NY HEAT Act offers bold, commonsense solutions - ending wasteful subsidies for gas expansion and giving New Yorkers a path to cleaner, healthier, more affordable energy.

The event comes as pressure builds on Assembly leadership to bring the bill to a vote before the legislative session ends in June. The NY HEAT Act has passed the Senate in previous years and has widespread support in the Assembly.

"We are members of Mothers Out Front Hudson Highlands, part of a national network of mothers, caregivers, and allies mobilizing for a livable climate for all kids, said Natalie Wren, a Mothers Out Front Volunteer Leader from Cornwall, NY. "Today we have brought 39 personal messages from Assemblyman Chris Eachus's constituents, calling on him to fight for our kids' future and support the NY HEAT Act.

"This bill would lower energy costs, transition buildings off fossil fuels, and provide crucial relief to working New Yorkers. We are grateful that our Newburgh neighbors have Assemblyman Jacobson's full support of the NY HEAT Act, and that we have three Assemblymembers in Central Hudson's service territory who have co-sponsored the bill. Unfortunately, Assemblyman Eachus has not yet taken that much-needed step."

"After three years of fighting, we are tired of waiting, and we're tired of excuses," continued Wren. "We are calling on Assemblyman Chris Eachus to get behind the NY HEAT Act and fight to get it passed before the legislative session ends."

The NY HEAT Act would:

  • End the "100-foot rule," a ratepayer-funded subsidy that wastes $200 million a year expanding gas pipelines
  • Eliminate the gas mandate, avoiding billions of dollars on future spending on new gas pipes and infrastructure
  • Support neighborhood-scale clean energy home upgrades at no out-of-pocket cost
  • Move us towards limiting energy bills to 6% of household income
  • Allow utilities to plan an orderly transition to a clean energy future

Mothers Out Front is a member-led climate justice organization. We are mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers and other caregivers coming together to make climate justice a priority issue that our decision-makers can no longer ignore. We are building a powerful grassroots movement to ensure a swift, complete and just transition away from fossil fuels and toward a clean and renewable energy future where our children and families can thrive, not just survive.
