ALBANY, NY (04/16/2012)(readMedia)-- Bruce MacBain, principal at Moravia Middle School, has been selected as the 2012 New York State Middle School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS). This award is given annually to a member of SAANYS and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administrators who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process.
MacBain has been an educator for 22 years and a school administrator in his current position since 2000. Moravia is a rural middle school, grades 6-8, in Cayuga County, with a total enrollment of 230.
In letters of recommendation from faculty and parents, MacBain is complimented on his leadership skills, his dedication to his students and the community, and his many accomplishments. Jeff Green, an English language arts teacher at Moravia Middle School, nominated MacBain stating, "I have witnessed first-hand our school evolve into a nationally recognized program: we were designated as an Essential Elements School-to-Watch in 2006 and re-designated in 2009. Bruce's leadership is the primary reason why we have been able to develop into such a successful school and earn such a prestigious distinction." Moravia Middle School parent Jane Manning, spoke of how MacBain's leadership style has helped to ease students, staff, and community through difficult transitions. In a letter of support, she said, "Dynamic, approachable, and current are all excellent descriptors of Bruce's style of leadership . . . He has the energy to research and implement new ideas in a passionate, caring way."
MacBain will be honored for his accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 4, 2012 at the Century House in Latham, New York. As the SAANYS/NASSP Middle School Principal of the Year, MacBain is now a candidate for the award of National Middle School Principal of the Year, an award sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. A principals institute and awards ceremony sponsored by NASSP and MetLife will be held in Washington, DC this fall.
