SUNY Oneonta senior Mordue Reinhardt, of Buffalo, NY, showcased artwork in a solo exhibition titled "Yoelmachus" from Oct. 6-23 on campus in the Project Space Gallery. The closing reception was held on campus on Thursday, Oct. 22, and featured remarks from Reinhardt.
Yoelmachus originated from a tabletop game Reinhardt ran with a few close friends and has since been working on adapting it into a book format. Yoelmachus opened as an exploration into the story of itself, the practice of world-building, creating a narrative through art and a celebration of the communal nature of storytelling.
"Fictional settings are mirrors of our reality; they allow us to view life through an alien lens," said Reinhardt. "Stories force us to consider our morals and values, challenging or reflecting them. We believe the characters we encounter to be people. They, too, would have their own art, their own cultural bodies. Fiction fosters empathy in place of the brutality of reality. It reminds us of what it means to be human; therefore, we cannot be human without it."
