"I am so proud of the work we have done as a Council for the past four years to ensure that everyday New Yorkers have a voice at City Hall-and as a proud Latina from a working class family, I will continue to make it my mission to drive that same agenda forward for the next four years," Farias said. "To ensure that voice grows louder, we need authentic, effective, independent leadership, with a record of success mobilizing the Council to take on and beat back the city's powerful forces."

"I want to thank each and every one of you for showing up to support a proud, strong Latina serving the City Council," Assemblymember Septimo said in endorsing Farias for Council Speaker. "Our city made a choice...to reject the politics of division. A choice to move forward together. A choice to rewrite New York City into a city that serves every single person. One that turns the page on politics of the past, where backroom deals are what decides the direction we're going to move in. We are coming together to demand leadership from women of color. I am here to support Amanda's leadership because her leadership has been happening for years. She has been a fighter for years. Amanda represents the leadership of solidarity, of integrity, of honesty."

Prior to SOMOS, Farias was endorsed by Assemblymembers Karines Reyes (chair of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force), Emerita Torres, Yudelka Tapia, and Senator Nathalia Fernandez. Majority Leader Farias is the highest ranking Latina local elected official in New York City, and the first to serve in that role and as Chair of the Committee on Economic Development.

"As Bronx Latinas we could not be more proud to endorse Majority Leader Amanda Farias as the next speaker of the City Council. Nearly one-in-three New Yorkers are Latino, yet our representation in political leadership does not reflect our reality. There's always a lot of lip service about how we need to elect more Latinos to leadership-and the Council has a chance to lead by making Amanda the next speaker. Amanda is a fierce fighter; a true New Yorker from working class roots who understands the challenges facing everyday New Yorkers in her Bronx district and beyond. It is critical we have a proven leader like Amanda as Speaker as the city faces the dual threat of an affordability crisis and a hostile Trump Administration."
