Airmen from the NY Air Guard's 109th Airlift Wing will exhibit arctic gear used for their polar missions during the Lake George Winter Carnival

LAKE GEORGE, NEW YORK (02/08/2022) (readMedia)-- Airmen from the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing will be displaying arctic equipment they use for their missions to Greenland and Antarctica during the annual Lake George Winter Carnival on February 12, 13 and 19.

The wing, which is based at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, flies the largest ski-equipped aircraft in the world, the LC-130 "Skibird." The wing flies missions to Greenland and Antarctica in support of U.S. climate science research and routinely lands on snow and ice.

The exhibit in Shepard Park includes a special heated artic tent used by wing personnel and a snowmobile and grooming sled which is used to prepare snow and ice runways called "skiways".

Visitors to the 109th Airlift Wing exhibit can check out the polar gear, enjoy a hot chocolate, play a cornhole game, and talk to Air National Guard recruiters about the 109th Airlift wing mission and opportunities for serving in the Air National Guard.
