CAMP ARIFJAN, KUWAIT (01/17/2017)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Sgt. Raymond Guzman, a Riverdale resident, received an Army Achievement Medal during a ceremony here on December 29, 2016. Guzman was recognized for his outstanding performance and efforts in coordinating the 369th Sustainment Brigade's Soldier and NCO of the quarter boards.

He is currently deployed to the Middle East and serves in the human resources section of the 369th Sustainment Brigade,nicknamed the "Harlem Hell Fighters".

The brigade headquarters deployed to Kuwait in early October with about 250 Soldiers to provide logistics support to military operations across the Central Command area of responsibility.

Guzman joined the New York National Guard in 2009 and is a graduate of Bronx Community College in New York with an Associate's degree in Business Administration. In civilian life, he is an NYPD officer, currently assigned to the Counter Terrorism Bureau. He is a member of both the New York Dominican Officers and the National Latino Officers Organizations.

His awards include: three Army Achievement Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Humane Service to NYC Medal.

Guzman's girlfriend is. Lisa Marcano and he has a daughter, Lilliana Guzman (9).

Guzman and the 369th Sustainment Brigade are expected to redeploy back to New York in the summer of 2017.

The 369th is famous as the "Harlem Hell Fighters." During World War I the unit was a segregated African-American Infantry Regiment which was one of the most decorated in the United States Army. The regiment's Soldiers fought under French command and were famous for never giving ground to the enemy.
