NY Works Bridge Deck Replacement Project Begins In Central New York

ALBANY, NY (10/11/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that, under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY Works program, construction has begun on a bridge deck replacement project on the structure carrying Route 222 over Fall Creek in the town of Groton, Tompkins County. This is one of several Central New York bridges slated for deck replacement as part of a $6.8 million contract.

"Governor Cuomo's NY Work's program means motorists will see more critically important construction work being completed quickly and efficiently," Commissioner McDonald said. "This bridge work can be completed this year and will mean a safer commute for people who rely on this bridge every day."

Work on Route 222 over Fall Creek began last week. This bridge deck will be replaced with a cast-in-place concrete deck. The bridge is closed during construction, with a signed detour route in place until mid-December. The detour route uses State routes 38, 13 and 281.

The construction contractor, Vector Construction of Cicero, Onondaga County, also will replace concrete decks on five other bridges in Cayuga and Onondaga counties, including:

• Interstate 481 over Kirkville Road, in the Town of DeWitt, Onondaga County. This bridge deck will be replaced using pre-cast concrete panels, which will require the bridge to be closed for separate periods in each direction during construction. The detour route during the closures will use Kirkville Road, Town Line Road and Route 298. Work is expected to take approximately one week and will take place in November.

As part of the contract, deck replacements will occur in 2013 on the following bridges:

• State Route 38 over Dry Creek, in the Town of Moravia, Cayuga County. Located just south of the Village of Moravia, the bridge deck will be replaced with a cast-in-place deck. The bridge will be done in two stages with traffic controlled by an alternating one-way signal. An off-site detour will be in place during the first stage of construction for vehicles over twelve feet wide and will consist of State routes 38A, 359, 41A, 41 and 90.

• State Route 38 over Owasco Creek in the Town of Conquest, Cayuga County. This deck replacement will also be done by staged construction using alternating one-way signals. An off-site detour will be in place during the first stage of construction for vehicles over sixteen tons. The State road detour will use routes 370, 34 and 31.

• Northbound Interstate 481 over the connector ramp to I-690 westbound, located in the Town of DeWitt, Onondaga County. Precast concrete panels will be used for this deck replacement project. The work will be done in two stages, with one lane available on northbound I-481 at all times.

• Route 174 over Nine Mile Creek, in the town of Camillus, Onondaga County. The existing deck will be replaced using staged construction. Traffic will be maintained with a one-way alternating signal for approximately six months during construction.

Motorists may encounter flaggers directing traffic. It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully through the many highway and bridge construction zones they will encounter.

NY Works focuses on improving the condition of bridges from fair condition to good condition in order to extend their service life. This rehabilitation work will better preserve the state's infrastructure and guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Bundling projects sites within close geographic locations into a single contract enables DOT to lower expenses and obtain lower bids.
