NY Works Bridge Project in Rochester Area Completed

ALBANY, NY (11/28/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that the Route 15 bridge over Interstate 390 in the town of Rush, Monroe County, has reopened to traffic. The bridge has been closed since July while the concrete bridge deck was replaced as part of a $13.8 million contract to replace bridge decks on structures in Erie and Monroe counties through Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY Works program.

"With NY Works funding we were able to get nearly twice as much work done as we did last year, providing local jobs and ensuring our transportation remains safe," Commissioner McDonald said. "The rehabilitated Route 15 bridge improves an important corridor relied upon by travelers and commercial vehicles alike."

Route 15 is a major north/south corridor that serves commuters and people doing business in the southern part of Monroe County and Livingston County. The bridge was closed during construction and traffic was detoured using Routes 251, 15A and 253.

Concrete decks replacements on the following bridges are also included in this NY Works contract:

· Interstate 490 eastbound and westbound bridges over Route 204 in the town of Gates and over Route 386 in the town of Chili, both in Monroe County, will begin next spring. Preliminary work has begun to build crossovers so traffic can use the opposite side of the highway during construction. One lane will be open in each direction.

· Route 400 (Aurora Expressway) northbound ramp bridge to Route 277 in the town of West Seneca, Erie County, will begin next year.

· Route 400 northbound and southbound bridges over Lein Road in West Seneca and over Jamison Road in Elma, Erie County, have been completed.

The construction contractor is Union Concrete Constructors of West Seneca, Erie County.

NY Works focuses on improving bridges that are in fair condition and bringing their condition to good. This preventive maintenance work better preserves the state's infrastructure and helps guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Bundling projects sites within close geographic locations into a single contract enables DOT to lower expenses and obtain lower bids.
