NYC Lawmakers Kick Off "100 Grand" Candy Giveaway Showing $600M Savings If Gov. Hochul Repeals 100-Foot Rule!
After years of advocacy, state lawmakers voted to help lower energy bills and repeal "100-foot rule" subsidy for gas companies; Lawmakers and advocates will travel across NYC with wheelbarrow of 5,810 "100 Grand" candy bars to represent the $581M that Governor can save New Yorkers on their energy bills by ending outdated mandate
BROOKLYN, NY (12/08/2025) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, Assemblymembers Jo Anne Simon and Pharra Souffrant-Forrest will join advocates for a candy giveaway to highlight how much Brooklyn residents can save on their energy bills if Governor Hochul signs legislation to repeal the "100-foot rule" bill. The group will stand alongside a traveling wheelbarrow of 5,810 "100 Grand" candy bars to represent the expected $581,000,000 that New Yorkers could save each year if Governor Hochul repeals this handout to fossil fuel companies that continues to drive up utility bills for New Yorkers.
1 in 4 New Yorkers are struggling to afford their energy bills, and the 100-foot rule is making this crisis worse by requiring utilities to charge New Yorkers more on their energy bills to expand the same gas system that is already too expensive. Thankfully, Governor Hochul is considering signing the bill - now, she can deliver on her promise to save families money and hold utilities accountable by repealing this handout.
The 100 Grand candy giveaway follows a series of press conferences featuring the traveling wheelbarrow, including recent events in Westchester, Kingston, Rochester, Brooklyn and Queens. Throughout the next two weeks, advocates will continue to roll the wheelbarrow to different neighborhoods and join lawmakers to distribute candy in their districts.
