NYISO Offers Market Training Opportunities

Courses Scheduled in March and June

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (02/20/2013)(readMedia)-- The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) will offer several opportunities in the coming months for individuals to learn more about New York's competitive wholesale electricity markets and power system operations.

On March 5, 2013, the NYISO will offer an introductory, one-day Market Overview Course at its Rensselaer, N.Y., headquarters. Recommended for those with less than a year of energy industry experience, this course provides attendees with a general overview of all aspects of the wholesale electricity markets in New York and includes segments on power system operations, market pricing and power contracting.

The NYISO also offers an in-depth, three and one-half day Market Orientation Course, geared toward active or prospective participants in New York's wholesale electricity markets. Attendees receive instruction in the purchase and sale of energy, capacity and related market products.

Two sessions of the Market Orientation Course are currently scheduled. The first will take place on March 19 – 22, 2013, in Rensselaer, N.Y. The second will be held on June 11-14 in White Plains, N.Y.

Since the NYISO began operating New York's electricity markets in late 1999, nearly 5,000 visitors representing hundreds of companies and governments, including more than 1,400 individuals from 75 nations, have toured the NYISO power control center to learn about NYISO grid operations, wholesale electricity markets and power system planning.

In the most recent State of the Market Report, the NYISO's independent market monitor, Potomac Economics, noted, "The NYISO markets are at the forefront of market design and have been a model for market development in a number of areas."

"The NYISO's markets continue to evolve and improve," said NYISO President and CEO Stephen G. Whitley. "Working in collaboration with market participants, stakeholders, regulators and policymakers, we continue to focus on enhancing market efficiency, optimizing grid operations, implementing comprehensive system planning and integrating technological advances to provide consumers the benefits of competitive wholesale electricity markets."

The cost of the Market Overview Course is $400, with a government rate of $50. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. The registration fee for the Market Orientation Course is $1,450, with a government rate of $300. The fee covers the cost of the training sessions, materials and meals.
