NYISO to Host Workshop on Distributed Energy Resource Roadmap

September 22 Event to Feature PSC Chair Audrey Zibelman and Industry Experts

RENSSELAER, NY (09/08/2016)(readMedia)-- The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) will host a workshop on Thursday, September 22, in Albany, NY to discuss ways in which distributed energy resources (DER) should be integrated into wholesale electricity markets.

"The emerging growth of distributed resources is changing the electric system," said NYISO President and CEO Brad Jones. "This workshop is part of our continuing effort to plan for the future. Our markets have a proven track record of adapting to changes in technology, and we look forward to working closely with market participants and stakeholders to shape how we integrate and embrace DER in New York."

New York State Public Service Commission Chair Audrey Zibelman will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers include Cristin Lyons, leader of the Grid Transformation practice at the management consulting firm of ScottMadden. A panel of industry experts will discuss challenges and opportunities related to DER participation in wholesale markets.

Additional topics of discussion will include:

  • integrating DER into energy markets and developing real-time scheduling ability,
  • aligning market development with the goals of the state's Reforming the Energy Vision initiative,
  • developing measurement and verification standards, and
  • aligning payments with the performance of resources.

The workshop will also allow participants to share perspectives and gather feedback on the NYISO's draft report, Distributed Energy Resource Roadmap for New York's Wholesale Electricity Markets. Released on August 17, 2016, the draft DER Roadmap solicits stakeholder comment on actions the NYISO may take to integrate DER into wholesale electricity markets over the next three to five years. Publication of the final report is expected later this year.

The Distributed Energy Resources Roadmap workshop is free of charge. However, space is limited and pre-registration is required for attendees. Registration must be received by Monday, September 19. Interested attendees can register by clicking the "RSVP here" link on the NYISO Committee Calendar on the NYISO website, www.nyiso.com.
