NYS Broadcasters Association Name New York Giants Football Team 2008 "New Yorkers Of The Year"

ALBANY, NY (06/04/2008)(readMedia)-- The New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) today announced that the New York Giants — which secured one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history this February by knocking off the unbeaten New England Patriots — have been named the association's 2008 "New Yorkers of the Year."

The team will be honored during the Tony Malara Awards Dinner at NYSBA's 47th Executive Conference slated for June 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the picturesque Sagamore Resort Hotel in Bolton Landing.

David Tyree, who made one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history when he trapped the ball against his helmet for a 32-yard reception on third-and-5 from the Giants' 44 with just 1:15 remaining, will accept the award on the team's behalf.

"When the committee met earlier in the year to discuss our award recipients, there was a unanimous choice for this award — the New York Giants, winners of Super Bowl XLII," said NYSBA President Joseph A. Reilly. "We are the New York State Broadcasters, so it makes perfect sense to honor our team's amazing underdog victory. I don't think anybody expected them to accomplish what they did."

"It's a special honor to have David attend our conference to accept the award," continued Reilly, noting that Tyree is one of the most productive and consistent special teams players in the NFL and has a knack of downing punts inside the 5-yard line. "His `supernatural' catch while being hounded by New England safety Rodney Harrison will live on in the hearts and minds of Giants' fans for many years to come."

After finishing the regular season with a disappointing 10-6 record, the 2007 New York Giants qualified for the playoffs as a wild-card team at the number five seed. They then beat the #4-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers (24-14), the top-seeded Dallas Cowboys (21-17), and the #2 Green Bay Packers (23-20, OT) to become the National Football Conference representative in Super Bowl XLII.

The team's fairytale ending in Glendale, Ariz. enabled the "G Men" to became the 9th wild card team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl and only the 5th wild card team to win the Super Bowl.
