ALBANY, NY (05/19/2008)(readMedia)-- The New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) today announced that acclaimed radio general manager Bob Bruno has been named to NYSBA's 2008 Hall of Fame.
The Warwick, N.Y. resident will be inducted during the Tony Malara Awards Dinner at NYSBA's 47th Executive Conference slated for June 24 at the picturesque Sagamore Resort Hotel in Bolton Landing.
Bruno launched his broadcasting career as an on-air personality in 1965, working at several suburban stations, including WCMC in Wildwood, NJ and WKIP in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In 1966, he moved to WVIP in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., where he became program director.
In 1975, he joined WNEW AM in New York as program director, moving to WOR in the same capacity in 1978. He served in that role for 10 years before being promoted to vice president and general manager in 1988, the position he held until his retirement in 2007.
"Bob is highly deserving of this honor," remarked NYSBA President Joseph A. Reilly. "He had tremendous staying power in this business. He remained a GM in New York City for many years, which is extremely unusual in such a highly competitive marketplace."
In 2000, Bruno was ranked third among the 50 Best general managers in America by Radio Ink magazine. Radio & Records also nominated him for general manager of the Year in 2003, and selected him as a Radio & Records News/Talk All-Star in 2007.
Bruno was a member of NYSBA's board of directors for more than 20 years, and served as a director on the board of New York Market Radio for more than a decade. He is a charter member of the New York Chapter of Mastermedia, an organization of Christian media professionals dedicated to building relationships between faith and media.
Bruno remains active in the radio business as Buckley's exclusive program consultant to WOR. In addition, his company, Dark Horse Productions, in partnership with Internet streaming providers, Jetcast, is launching a new Web-based adult targeted music format, The Best of Everything, soon to be available for broadcast syndication.
Bruno joins fellow Hall of Fame-bound nominees, including Roger King, the "father of modern TV syndication;" veteran Capital Region radio manager John Kelly ; Edward McLaughlin, former president of ABC Radio Network and the man who discovered Rush Limbaugh; and, legendary Buffalo Bills television and radio announcer Van Miller.
