ALBANY, NY (07/30/2008)(readMedia)-- In response to Governor David Paterson televised address, Michael H. Rosenberg, MD, President of the Medical Society of the State of New York, described Governor Paterson's statement as "courageous."
Dr. Rosenberg was referring to Governor Paterson's unprecedented speech in which he presented in clear and unambiguous terms the serious fiscal problems being faced by New York State as a result of tax revenues being markedly lower than what had originally been forecast. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the Governor indicated that he would shortly set forth a series of proposals to address the crisis in which New York now finds itself. He indicated that he would call back the Legislature to a special "emergency economic session" on August 19th to take the steps necessary to address the situation immediately saying "...the time to act is now."
Dr. Rosenberg stated: "MSSNY and the tens of thousands of physicians we represent are acutely aware of the problems being faced by millions of New Yorkers in trying to make ends meet. We know all too well that too often health care needs are sacrificed by people who are having difficulty putting food on the table and paying their rent or mortgage. We will work with Governor Paterson to make certain that every step is taken to prevent this from happening. No one should go without necessary health care. We pledge our full support to Governor Paterson, the legislative leaders and the Members of the Legislature as all of us put aside partisan differences in order to make certain that New York State overcomes this looming crisis. We are and will remain the Empire State."
