NYSDOT Announces NY Works Paving For Hudson Valley Roads

ALBANY, NY (07/11/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that construction is under way on $32.8 million in work to resurface nearly 100 miles of State roads in Dutchess, Orange, Ulster and Westchester counties through Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY Works program.

"Governor Cuomo's NY Works program speeds up our bridge and highway reconstruction efforts and puts people back to work," Commissioner McDonald said "The traveling public will see nearly twice as much highway work than just last year. We ask motorists to be patient and drive carefully through construction zones."

With today's announcement, construction has begun on the first NY Works transportation improvement projects less than three months after Governor Cuomo signed the 2012-2013 Budget allowing funding for these projects to move forward.

NY Works focuses on improving pavement that is in fair condition and bringing it to good condition. This preventive maintenance work will better preserve the state's infrastructure and guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Bundling project sites within close geographic locations into a single contract enables DOT to lower expenses and obtain lower bids.

The paving work is split up into the following four resurfacing contracts:

A $3.4 million contract to resurface 17 miles of pavement, upgrade drainage systems, reconstruct shoulders, and restore pavement markings in Dutchess County.

Construction contractor Peckham Road Corporation of White Plains, Westchester County, will address:

• Three miles of Route 82 from the Taconic State Parkway to Route 55 in East Fishkill and LaGrange. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by August.

• Three miles of Route 113 from Route 9 to Route 376 in Poughkeepsie. Work is scheduled to begin at the end of July and be completed by September.

• Six miles of Route 9 from South Cross Road to West Dorsey Lane in Hyde Park. Work is scheduled to begin in early September and be completed by the end of October.

• Four and a half miles of Route 9 from Old Post Road to the Columbia County line in Red Hook. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-September and be completed in November.

A $15.9 million contract to resurface 42 miles of pavement and restore pavement markings in Orange County. Construction contractor Halmar International of Pearl River, Rockland County, will address:

• Seventeen miles of Route 17 eastbound and westbound between Exit 122 at Crystal Run Road in Wallkill and Exit 131 at Routes 17/32 in Woodbury. Night time work has begun. This project is expected to be substantially completed by September and fully completed in November.

• Eight miles of Route 208 from Route 17M to Moodna Creek in Monroe and Washingtonville. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by September.

A $6.2 million contract to resurface 27 miles of pavement, upgrade drainage systems, reconstruct shoulders, and restore pavement markings in Ulster and Orange counties. Construction contractor Callanan Industries of Kingston, Dutchess County, will address:

• Nine miles of Route 9W from the Lloyd town line to Clay Road in Esopus. Work has begun and is expected to be completed in August.

• Six miles of Route 9W from Lake Road to Route 32 in Ulster and Saugerties. Work is has begun and is expected to be completed in late August.

• Four miles of Route 300 from Route 208 in Wallkill, Ulster County, to the Thruway (Interstate 87) overpass in Newburgh, Orange County. Work is scheduled to begin in July and be completed in August.

• Eight miles of Route 32 from the Wallkill River to the Kingston city line in Rosendale and Ulster. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-August and be completed in September.

A $7.3 million contract to resurface 12 miles of pavement, upgrade drainage systems and restore pavement markings in Westchester County.

Construction contractor Grace Industries, LLC of Plainview, Nassau County, will address:

• Four miles of Route 22 from Middle Patent Road to Route 121 in Bedford and North Castle. Work has begun and is expected to be completed in mid-July.

• Four miles of Route 172 from Route 117 to Route 22 in Mount Kisco and Beford. Work has begun and is expected to be completed in August.

• Four miles of Route 119 from Benedict Avenue at the border of Tarrytown, to Aqueduct Road at the border of White Plains in Greenburgh and Elmsford. Work is scheduled to begin in August and be completed in November.

Motorists may encounter flaggers directing traffic. It is imperative that motorists remember this season to drive carefully through the many highway and bridge construction zones they will encounter.
