NYSDOT Announces Safety Improvements At Ocean Parkway Intersection

ALBANY, NY (08/27/2013)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced the Department has finalized plans for safety improvements at the intersection of Ocean Parkway and the Prospect Expressway with Church Avenue in Brooklyn. The plans, which were developed in coordination with the New York City Department of Transportation, will include a pedestrian refuge island and other enhancements that will improve safety for all users of this busy intersection.

"Safety is always our first priority, and that means the safety of all users of our roads," said Commissioner McDonald. "These improvements will provide enhanced protection for pedestrians crossing the Prospect Expressway, while assuring the safety of all who drive and ride through the intersection."

The pedestrian refuge area will be installed on the north side, or Prospect Expressway side, of the intersection. The island will provide a stopping point for pedestrians and will shorten crossing distances. In addition, new pedestrian signals will be installed on the island, along with protective barriers and new pavement striping to reduce travel lane widths and provide space for the refuge area. The plans also include:

• Installation of high visibility crosswalk markings on the north side of the intersection;

• Addition of new flashing signals with yellow arrows for right turning vehicles, warning motorists to proceed with caution and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk;

• Installation of new "Traffic Signal Ahead" signs along Prospect Expressway, and speed limit signs on Ocean Parkway; and

• Replacement of warning signs.

Final design of the project will be completed next month and construction is expected to start this fall.

Assemblyman James Brennan said, "I am pleased to see that the New York State Department of Transportation is working closely with the NYCDOT to enhance pedestrian safety at this busy intersection."

NYSDOT has commenced a broader study to identify opportunities for safety enhancements at 38 intersections along the entire four-mile length of Ocean Parkway. NYSDOT will work with the New York City Department of Transportation to implement any recommended improvements.
