NYSDOT Completes Niagara Falls Boulevard Bridge Project
$4.3 Million Transportation Investment in Towns of Niagara and Wheatfield
ALBANY, NY (11/06/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced the completion of a $4.3 million project to replace the US Route 62 (Niagara Falls Boulevard) Bridge over Bergholtz Creek in the towns of Niagara and Wheatfield, Niagara County.
"Niagara Falls Boulevard is a vital transportation corridor, serving both local mobility and regional transportation needs," Commissioner McDonald said. "The expanded lane configuration of the new bridge provides continuity on the corridor and enhances safety for all users with the addition of a center turn lane and sidewalk."
The 78-year old bridge that carried four, 10-foot travel lanes was replaced with a wider bridge that carries four, 12-foot travel lanes and a continuous two-way center turn lane. The new five lane configuration now matches the reconstructed section of Niagara Falls Boulevard south of the bridge, increasing safety for the traveling public.
In addition to vehicular traffic, the bridge accommodates both pedestrians and bicyclists with a new sidewalk on the south side and 5-foot shoulders. The project also included resurfacing pavement on Niagara Falls Boulevard from NY Route 265 (Military Road) to the Cayuga Drive Extension.
The construction contractor for the project is Concrete Applied Technology Corporation (CATCO) of Alden, Erie County. Construction began in the spring of 2011.
