NYSDOT Issues Statewide Airport Directory
Directory Information Helps Increase Airport Use and Promotes Aviation Safety
ALBANY, NY (06/30/2010)(readMedia)-- The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) today announced completion of an updated New York State Airport Directory, a compilation of data, graphics and contact information for each public use airport in the state. The directory also contains a summary of information for each private airport in the state.
"The aviation industry provides significant support for New York State's economy, not only by creating jobs, but also by stimulating tourism, easing freight shipment and making the state more attractive to businesses who consider locating here," NYSDOT Acting Commissioner Stanley Gee said. "With its pivotal role in the state's economy, it is important that a comprehensive directory of airports, helipads and seaplane bases is available to help bolster airport use and increase safety."
The directory, last updated in 2002, lists all commercial service, general aviation and private airports, as well as heliports and seaplane bases. It includes key data, along with runway diagrams and aerial photographs for public-use airports.
There are currently 18 commercial airports operating across the state, including Albany International, John F. Kennedy International, Syracuse-Hancock International, Greater Rochester International and Buffalo Niagara International. Additionally, there are approximately 467 non-commercial airports across the state, including private-use airports and public-use or "general aviation" airports that provide charter flights, business aviation services and training and recreational opportunities.
Costs for production of the directory were primarily covered by a $100,000 targeted Continuous Airport System Planning grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. Each public-use airport will receive a copy of the directory, and a limited quantity will be available to the public. The directory also can be downloaded and applicable section printed from the NYSDOT Web site at www.nysdot.gov/modal/aviation.
The Department's mission includes the provision of a balanced and safe transportation system to meet the needs of the traveling public in New York State. Aviation, which is an important component of this system, is funded as part of NYSDOT's multi-year capital program.
NYSDOT interfaces with 485 public and private aviation facilities, provides state grants and technical assistance for public and private airports, and has limited regulatory authority over the aviation industry in New York State.
