Navy's surgeon general to speak Sept. 29 at DMU on humanitarian aid
Public is invited to hear Vice Admiral Adam Robinson, M.D.
DES MOINES, IA (09/28/2010)(readMedia)-- Come hear the Navy's surgeon general speak at Des Moines University (DMU) September 29 at noon about the Navy's hospital ships used for humanitarian aid.
Vice Admiral Adam Robinson, M.D., will present "The U.S. Navy's role in global humanitarianism and disaster relief" in the DMU Student Education Center, 3300 Grand Ave. The event was organized by students, is free and open to all, no RSVP required.
"We're excited to learn more about the Navy's role in health care around the world and excited to hear it from such a high profile person," said Vincenzo Happach, a D.O. student. "Information about the U.S. Mercy & U.S. Comfort, Navy hospital ships, will be particularly interesting."
Learning more about the Comfort & Mercy is a big draw because Des Moines University is one of the few medical school in the country to begin a medical rotation on board a Navy hospital ship. Faculty will visit a ship this fall for a preview of the setup and students will begin the rotation in April 2011.
Vice Admiral Adam M. Robinson Jr., M.D., assumed duties as the 36th surgeon general of the Navy and chief of the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in 2007. He's been in the Navy since 1977, received his M.D. degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and M.B.A. from the University of South Florida. The author of numerous presentations and publications, he holds fellowships in the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is a member of the Le Societe Internationale de Chirurgie, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and the National Business School Scholastic Society, Beta Gamma Sigma. He is a Certified Physician Executive from the American College of Physician Executives. He has earned the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two), Meritorious Service Medal (three), Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various service and campaign awards.
