ROCHESTER, NY (03/19/2010)(readMedia)-- Nazareth College is pleased to announce that alumna Renee Scialdo Shevat was recently honored at the CICU (Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities) 2010 Alumni Hall of Distinction Awards Ceremony. She was one of 33 graduates of independent colleges and universities throughout New York state that were honored. They were selected for their contributions to New York State's economy and the connections they have made between higher education and economic development.

As an undergraduate at Nazareth in the late 70s, Shevat, of Cobleskill, served as president of the college's student government and the Association of Greater Rochester Area Colleges. She was also an active member in statewide student advocacy activities. The leadership skills she fostered while at Nazareth, and her ability to bring people together to influence change, has helped Shevat in her diverse career. Shevat is currently the president of Herkimer Diamond Mines and two related wholesale businesses.

Shevat's recent work includes developing a new Marina at the Herkimer Thruway exit and she is the owner and president of the Unlocked Legends. Shevat is also an advocate for quality of life issues as they apply to the health and education fields and has earned many grants for the region including a $1.5 million grant from the Department of Transportation and a Federal Housing and Urban Development grant for $1.7 million. Currently, she serves on the Cobleskill Regional Hospital Board of Trustees, is Vice President to the Friends of Bassett, Secretary to the Upstate New York Tourism Alliance Board of Directors, and is on the State University of New York Statewide Strategic Planning Committee.

The Alumni Hall Distinction Award was created by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities in 2000 to recognize New York's independent sector graduates who have made extraordinary contributions to society through their careers and community involvement.
